Diagnostic Scans

Abdomen and pelvic scan. Scan shows abdominal and pelvic structures such as the liver, pancreas kidneys and aorta plus the main pelvic organs.
Abdomen. A scan concentrating on the upper abdominal structures such as the liver and spleen as in cirrhosis of the liver or the pancreas and biliary tree in the assessment of jaundice.
Pelvic Scan. Specifically to assess the uterus and ovaries in women and in men the prostate and urinary bladder, useful to assess gland enlargement in the groins.
Leg Veins. Used to visualise the leg veins to assess the presence or absence of clots in the deep veins as occurs after long haul flying.
Prostate. Good test to show the size and shape of the prostate and bladder base which is of value in assessing changes in urinary function common in the older male.
Heart. Good non invasive test to show cardiac pump function and assess cardiac valves and show the overall cardiac anatomy.
Testes. The best simple test to assess "lumps" in the scrotum and in practice to reassure a patient that they have not got cancer of the testis.
Pregnancy. Established test to assess the baby in terms of normal developement and very informative in diagnosing early pregnancy shortly after the first missed period and determining whether the baby is viable.
Breast. Good test to assess a single breast "lump" and screen the "lumpy" breast which is often associated with cyclical breast pain.
Thyroid. A reliable test to clarify the nature of an apparent thyroid swelling or elucidate the cause of a generalised thyroid swelling (goitre).
Carotid Arteries. Accurate in showing degenerative changes (plaque formation) in the wall of the internal carotid arteries in the neck which can be associated with transient changes in vision and cerebral function, the "transient ischaemic attack" syndrome.
