Ultrasound Scanning – my background

Dr. Colin Mackintosh is a Consultant Diagnostic Radiologist specialising in Ultrasound Scanning of all types.

He was Consultant Radiologist to the Royal Free Hospital from 1970 - 2001 and retired from the National Health Service in 2001 and have been in private practice at 50 Harley Street since then.

"I was ‘born and brought up’ in the NHS and obtained my basic Medical Degree at Edinburgh. I spent some years in General Surgery before taking up Diagnostic Radiology in 1965 and therefore have considerable experience in Diagnostic Radiology, from plain film interpretation to the various modern scanning and specialised diagnostic techniques." says Dr. Colin Mackintosh.

Often a patient consults their Doctor and an ultrasound scan is ordered. The subsequent delay in obtaining this can amount to months. In this situation Dr. Colin Mackintosh can perform an ultrasound scan quickly and send films and a report to the appropriate referring Doctor.

In practice the type of medical situation which is helped greatly by a quickly done ultrasound scan is bleeding in early pregnancy, the assessment of abdominal pain and the diagnosis of soft tissue swelling appearing in the neck possibly thyroid in origin.

Commonly we see young men concerned about the delay in investigating an apparent testicular swelling, middle aged ladies worried that they have gall stones ... the list is almost endless.

The one thing these problems have in common is that the Ultrasound Scan can greatly clarify the medical situation and speed up treatment decisions.
