I am Dr Colin E Mackintosh. I specialise in Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning which is a technique allowing images to be made of soft tissues and therefore pictures can be made of the human body and the anatomical structures studied. Any part of the body which does not contain air and which is not shielded by bone can be scanned and visualised.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning has many practical applications. The original use was in obstetrics to assess the unborn child. Now, many structures are well visualised with ultrasound scanning from facial structures such as the salivary glands down through the thyroid in the neck to the heart, abdomen and pelvis. The soft tissues and blood vessels of the legs are also well visualised.
The great advantage of Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning is that it is quick, painless, and modest in cost and does not utilise any damaging radiation. No special preparation is needed to scan a patient and the results are immediate.
In my practice at 50 Harley Street I usually report the ultrasound films immediately after the scan and discuss the results with the patient. The report and images can then be taken by the patient or sent to the referring Doctor if required.
The essence of Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning is to get good images quickly, give an informed opinion on the spot and send the required information to the referring Doctor immediately. I often scan patients who refer themselves as they become concerned about a problem and want to get results quickly.
